Ashish Rai, MBBS, MSPH, PhD

Principal Scientist, Health Services Research

Ashish Rai, MBBS, MSPH, PhD, is a health economist and Principal Scientist, Health Services Research at the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Rai has a long-standing interest in assessing the diffusion, costs, and outcomes of innovations in oncology, and the determinants and outcomes of cancer survivors’ experience of care. He has successfully collaborated with researchers from academia and government agencies on several studies about cancer care patterns and outcomes using a variety of data sources including the SEER-Medicare data, Medical Expenditures Panel Survey, and cancer registries. Dr. Rai led a 2019 publication in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute which described the merits and limitations of the available data for evaluating the implementation of lung cancer screening in community practice, and suggested improvements in the data infrastructure in view of the key unanswered questions related to lung cancer screening. He is also keenly interested in cancer survivorship care, specifically, cancer survivors’ communication with providers about the physical, psychological, and financial effects of cancer and its treatment; the process of survivorship care planning; and aspects related to cancer survivors’ lifestyle and wellbeing. Another of his research interests is financial burden of cancer and its treatment, and its impact on the receipt of guideline-concordant care. His current research projects include assessing patient-provider discussions about out-of-pocket costs of cancer care and describing the patterns of use and costs of oral targeted treatment for advanced lung cancer.

Prior to joining the American Cancer Society in 2016, Dr. Rai served as Academy Health Delivery System Science Fellow at Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute, Palo Alto, CA.
